Why Does Focus LCD Import all LCD Modules via UPS Air and Not Boat?

Our goal is to reduce our customer’s
lead time! This has become more important now as
lead times with factories are increasing. We find that one of the greatest timing savings is to ship all LCD modules via UPS Air.
The advantages of shipping display via are:
- We can ship one box alone and not wait until an entire pallet is ready to ship.
- We can track the package and know where it is at any time.
- The lead time from factory to Focus Displays is from 5 to 7 days.
We believe we are the only LCD supplier in the USA that ships all our displays via air express.
Below are estimated lead times for standard and customized LCD modules:
- Custom LCD samples = 4 weeks
- Standard LCD modules = 3 week
- Production of customized LCD modules = 6 to 8 weeks
- Production of standard LCD displays = 6 to 8 weeks.
Please add on one week of delivery time from factory to our LCD warehouse in Arizona.
LCD Panel Supply Lead Time is Increasing

Japan is still recovering from the damaged caused by the earthquake. See
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-03-16/japan-s-quake-may-hurt-battery-semiconductor-wafer-lcd-panel-markets.html. The loss of life is very sad and tragic.
What we are finding is that for the first few weeks after the earthquake, lead time and cost of LCD’s has changed very little. However, in the last two weeks this has changed.
• LCD display modules Lead times have increased by two weeks.
• LCD cost has increased by an estimated 8%
• Tooling for custom LCD’s has not changed much, but MOQ of customized LCD’s has increased.
We are holding safety stock of
standard character LCD’s including:
• 16×2 STN yellow/green LED backlight
• 20×2 STN Yellow/green LED backlight wide temperature
• 16×1 STN Yellow/green backlight
• Standard alphanumeric displays.
The majority of
static displays are considered custom LCD modules and we do not carry inventory for these.
Small LCD’s are easier for us to hold in inventory due to lower shipping cost and they take up less room in the warehouse.
How the Labor shortage in China is Affecting the Lead-Time of Custom LCD Displays

Focus display’s goal is to provide you with minimal lead time and lower development cost for you Custom LCD project.
We are finding that lead times for custom LCD manufactures are being hit hard due to two main factors.
1.
Labor shortage in China
- The current lead time of LCD samples 5 to 6 weeks may be pushed out to 7 to 8 weeks.
- The current lead time of LCD displays in production quantities may be pushed from 6 weeks to 8 weeks.
2. Factories returning from Holiday.
- LCD manufactures in China have been off for two weeks. As they return back they will have a large backlog to delay production of LCD’s.
- Counter drawings necessary for custom LCD glass may require an additional two days.

Chinese New Year & Spring Festival Affect Lead Times on LCD Monochrome Displays

Please be aware that there are a few upcoming Chinese holidays that will affect the manufacture and shipment of your LCD units. This will affect all suppliers of alphanumeric LCD displays, character LCD, numeric LCD display, static displays, segment displays, 7 segment LCD display, 14 segment LCD display, 16 segment LCD displays, and monochrome graphic displays. Remember, even if your display is not directly manufactured in China, many components used to build the display will be.
Because of this, we at Focus Displays recommend that you add a bit of cushion to your lead time to counter this delay. As a general rule, we suggest that, beginning in late October, you add at least two weeks for generic displays, or three weeks for
custom displays.
Below is a list of the three main types of displays the Focus Displays offers.
Character Liquid Crystal displays. All of the LCD displays below come in TN, STN or FSTN. 8×1 LCD display, 8×2 LCD display, 16×1 LCD display, 16×2 LCD display, 16×4 LCD display, 20×2 LCD display, 20×4 LCD display, 24×2 LCD display, 40×1 LCD display, 40×2 LCD display, 40×4 LCD display.
Static LCD display aka Segment LCD display. All of the static or segment displays below come in the following configurations: 7(seven) segment LCD display, 14(fourteen) segment LCD display, 16(sixteen) segment LCD displays.
Monochrome Graphic LCD Module. This includes 122×32 LCD display, 128×128 LCD Display, 128×64 LCD display, 240×64 LCD display.
What are the Costs of Shipping LCD Monochrome Displays UPS Air vs. Boat?

At Focus Display Solutions, we ship all our LCD display modules from the factory by UPS air. There are several reasons why we do this.
- The LCD modules arrive from the factory in less than 7 days.
- We can ship as few as one box if necessary. Many times when you ship by boat, you need to have a minimum number of boxes or weight before they will ship. This means that your liquid crystal display may be waiting for some time before it ships.
- We are able to track and estimate within a day or two when your display modules will arrive.
Of course, this brings up the question of cost. Do we charge more to ship by air instead of boat?
The answer is yes. We could save you a few pennies per LCD display to ship by boat. However, the downside is that your lead-time would stretch from 8 weeks to 16 weeks or more. We find that most customers prefer not to have to order their LCD’s 3 to 4 months in advance.
Current Lead times Each monochrome display has many options. The options below do not affect the lead-time of any Alphanumeric or Numeric LCD Display.
- TN display, STN display or FSTN display
- LED backlight or EL backlight
- Normal temperature or wide temperature
- Reflective, transflective or transmissive
At the time of this writing the standard lead time for Focus Displays is listed below by type.
Alphanumeric LCD display / character LCD module / numeric LCD displays are at
8 weeks.
This includes the following models: 8×1 LCD display, 8×2 LCD display, 16×1 LCD display, 16×2 LCD display, 16×4 LCD display, 20×2 LCD display, 20×4 LCD display, 24×2 LCD display, 40×1 LCD display, 40×2 LCD Display, 40×4 LCD display.
Static LCD Segment Displays – 7(seven) segment, 14(fourteen) segment, 16(sixteen) segment displays are at
7 weeks.
Monochrome Graphic LCD Displays are at
8 weeks.

Replacement Monochrome LCD Modules / Custom LCD Display Design and Engineering may take up to
4 weeks additional lead-time.
