Touch Panels Overview
A touch panel, sometimes refered to as a touchscreen, is a transparent overlay/screen that is touch-sensitive. The touchscreen is mounted on the front of the display. Its primary purpose is to provide a method of interaction between the user and the LCD display.
The touch screen requires a
driver IC chip to convert the users touch to signals. Driver chips are available from companies such as Microchip and Texas Instruments. The panel makes use of a coordinate system to determine where the user touched the screen.
There are two primary types of touch panels: Resistive and Capacitive touch panels.
Contrast ratio
Contrast ratio is one way to measure the sharpness of the display. This ratio is the difference between the darkest black and the brightest white that the display is able to produce. The higher the number on the left, the sharper the image. A typical contrast ratio may be 300:1. This number ratio means that the white is 300 times brighter than the black. Some industries call this the static contrast ratio.
Brightness/Nits/ Luminance
Nits is a way to measure the brightness of the display. It is possible to order the same TFT with different nit brightness. The option of more nits can add a few dollars to the cost.
A “nit” is the amount of light that one candle delivers in a 1 square meter box.
